A console table may seem only appropriate for an entrance hall, however, in recent years the design of console tables has evolved and they have become my go-to piece of furniture to finish off any room. Whether it be a study, a living room, entrance hall or dining room – a console table enables you to create moments of style, functionality and personality in your space. Now, I’m sure you can imagine, you can buy a great console table as a foundational piece, but where it really comes to life is the console table decor and styling.
Here are some of my top tips and tricks that I tend to incorporate when styling a console table to bring it to life.
Step 1: Bottoms Up
Console tables don’t always have an open shelf at the bottom but when I’m searching for the perfect piece – I always try to source open consoles with either a bottom shelf or completely bare. Open consoles present the opportunity to ground the bottom with some more substantial items. Baskets are a great option if you need some extra storage but don’t be afraid of using large vases, sculptures or ornaments on the bottom shelf. Generally, the rule of thumb is to use items on the bottom that tall enough to only leave a very small space between the item and the top of the console table.

Step 2: The Backdrop
Always hang or lean a mirror or artwork behind the console table. This step is essential to tying the whole moment together. The piece should always be reasonably large to ensure you really elevate the area and to complete the styling of the console itself. If you have limited wall space then simply use a smaller or longer piece. Either way, ensure you don’t skip this step! Step 3: Statement Decor
At this point, you need to start adding some height and visual weight to the top shelf of the console. When I say “statement decor” I mean significant pieces like lamps and large vases. By now you know my love for using stacking books to elevate a piece of decor and this is a great technique not just for shelving but for console tables too.

Step 4: Finishing Touches
The final step is to add the details! At this stage, we only want to add the finishing touches that will compliment the elements we have already added. I say it time and time again, but remember that less is more, so only add touches that you feel really elevate the statement pieces. There are countless ways to accessorise a console table but I love to add some greenery or florals, decorative objects or small bowls and trays which work wonders as a practical yet beautiful accessory.
