I often find when new clients come to me, they know what they want to achieve but don’t quite know how to get there. It usually comes down to the finishing touches and how to style your house to really make it a home and by that I mean – YOUR home. Interior styling can really elevate your house from feeling like it could belong to anyone to truly being your home and a reflection of who you are.

I’m going to take you through some of my go-to styling ideas that will make your house feel refined and timeless. Whether you prefer a cosy farmhouse feel or a modern contemporary, these ideas can be applied anywhere to make your house a home.

Add Cosy Textiles

This might seem like an obvious one, but you would surprised as to how many people don’t have an abundance of cushions and throws on every appropriate piece of furniture. Cosy textiles are the easiest way to add colour and personality into a room. Whether you like bright bohemian colours and patterns or modern luxury, this styling idea will help anyone transform their house into a home on a budget or not.

Lay Down a Rug

A rug is a quick win that can take your tired flooring and bring it back to life in an instant. A rug can change the whole aesthetic of your room and similar to cosy textiles, they portray so much personality! Boho, rustic, contemporary or traditional – ensure you pick the pieces that represent you and how you want your home to feel. Use a rug to frame your space, whether it is zoning a large room, or simply covering the majority of the floor in the living room or bedroom.

Introduce Florals

A simple styling trick that most people don’t think about. A beautiful vase with a fresh bunch of seasonal flowers will brighten your space. Go for colours the represent you and your interiors – the display will simply draw the colours from within your space to make it feel homely. If flowers aren’t your thing, go for dried or faux flowers – pampas is very trendy for bohemian style interiors – or beautiful greenery in plant pots to bring the outside in.

Rearrange Furniture

Have you got your furniture arranged that is 1) practical and functional for your needs and 2) does the flow work in the space? Think about these questions and consider a rearrange of your furniture if you can’t answer yes to both! Ensuring your furniture layout works for you and how you live will ensure your house starts to feel like a home. Layout and functionality is everything and its okay to think outside of the box and break the traditional conventions of room layouts. The key to any functional room is to have a focal point, as long as you have that, rearrange as much as you like! You can also introduce unconventional furniture items – such as floor cushions to help with space and practicality.

Touch up the Walls

Think about adding mirrors and wall art to bring your walls to life. These accessories are definitely considered a finishing touch when styling a room. You can really showcase your personality through wall art as it acts as an outlet for feeling and expression. Source some art – from suppliers such as Desenio – that incorporates the colour scheme of the room and think about the positioning. Does it look better to have one big piece of art above the fireplace? Or would three frames with progressive artwork look better on a wider wall? Mirrors act as light reflectors and can make your room feel brighter and bigger. Ensure you place them to help move the light around the room, mirrors can create some beautiful light that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.
